Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Last week was hard. Really hard. My wife and I had to follow through with the difficult decision to put our dog Benny to sleep. Having a pet pass away in your arms is brutal. I know it’s not the same as losing a family member, but it’s close. We are still heartbroken. On the drive home from the vet’s office, through the tears, I said we need to live what we preach. I often remind the men in prison of the lesson Job learned. He and his friends reasoned for 29 chapters trying to explain why Job lost everything. Asking WHY is not the right question; God calls us to trust Him. The right questions to ask in adversity are “Lord, what are you trying to show me?” and “Lord, what is the lesson you’re trying to teach me?”
In the depth of our sadness, I asked God those questions. What was the purpose of experiencing such heartache? I sensed one response was that He was giving us a small taste of His heart for the lost, and where their choice would ultimately lead. I’ve prayed many times for God to break my heart with what breaks His. This was an answer to that prayer.
My mind later recalled 2 Cor 1:3-4, which says “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” Another ministry volunteer was facing a similar situation with a beloved pet whose body was failing, and I was able to share some information and insight that I found very helpful, and hopefully his family did too.
God is constantly on the move and looking out for us, we just need to open our spiritual eyes and ask Him to help us see what He’s doing. And I thank you for joining us as we all seek (and hopefully see) what God is doing through the volunteers and chaplains in this prison ministry. God’s support is essential, and your support is pretty darn important too. May God our Father bless your time in prayer for prisoners, staff, and everyone connected with ministry at Chester County Prison.
Grace and Peace,
Rick
