Banquet Reminders!

With less than 2 weeks until the annual Onesimus Ministries annual banquet, we are thrilled to announce our special guest speakers:

          Mr. Lennie Spitale

          Mr. Pete Zandona

The Banquet will be held on Friday, October 27th at Mt. Vernon Christian Church in Kirkwood, PA.  Hors d’oeuvres start at 6:00 PM & dinner commences at 6:30 PM.

This is a blessed time of food, fellowship, and gratitude for the saving work our beloved chaplains, Rhonda & Heinrich do inside each Chester County Prison in ministering to both the men and women inside.  With the resumption of services recently, this year’s event will be a celebration of God’s faithfulness in ministering to the inmates as the Lord’s hand and feet once again thanks to the generosity of our benefactors.

This event is the primary fundraiser for the ministry, and so we hope many will come to share a meal, hear updates from the chaplains, as well as an inspiring message on prison ministry from this year’s guest speaker, Lennie Spitale.  Lennie will share the transformative power of God’s grace on his journey from inmate to a captive of Jesus Christ.  He’ll be joined by a gentleman that he’s mentored, Pete Zandona, who is carrying on Lenny’s legacy in walking in newness of life from criminal to productive citizen after giving his life to Christ.

Kindly confirm your attendance by October 23rd by either:

          Email: pastorvern@gmail.com

The Joy of Serving

If my memory serves me correctly (and oft times it doesn’t anymore), on Friday August 4th all of us who had been serving on Monday nights for Prison Fellowship received the long awaited green light email: Chester County Prison is open again to religious volunteers.  After 3 ½ years of waiting and wondering, we could resume ministering to hurt and broken men in desperate need of the Gospel, whether for the first time or a fresh reminder of what Jesus had done for them.

We had three days to scramble and prepare to go in and share the love of God. We could serve again!!  What had been a great joy interrupted by a terrible catastrophe was now going to be experienced again. The routine that had become such a part of our lives for so many years, replaced by a different routine, was now back.

So, what makes serving such a great joy? How can it be joyful to serve in such a dark place as a prison? I know if you asked any of us who serve in this ministry, we would tell you we would much rather serve somewhere else. Not because we don’t want to be there, but because we don’t like to see anybody in pain and hurting and in a place where there is little they can do to remedy their circumstances. We understand the harsh realities of a sinful, fallen world. We listen to their stories and testimonies and these men are in pain, but many of them not without hope. Our joy is to bring them the hope and promise of the Gospel, of the eternal relationship they can have with Jesus.

The joy we find in serving in Prison is a multi-faceted joy. One of the joys is that we get to dig deeply into God’s Word to share the Good News with them and it enriches our souls as well. We are inspired to read, meditate and speak God’s Word to men who need it and so do we!!  I love the way God’s Word opens to me as I prepare a message and I know I speak for all in this Ministry that this is a great joy!

We get to pray for the hurting. We find great joy in communicating with our Heavenly Father, asking Him to help these guys knowing, in faith, that He will. We serve our God who is loving and caring beyond measure!

We also experience being ministered to by our brothers when we’re struggling with something as we pray for each other. It is so comforting to know that there are men serving along side us who have each other’s backs. There are also numerous people who pray for us. Thank you! It is joy to know we are not alone in God’s work. During my walk as a Christian, I have been ministered to and helped by brothers and sisters who serve along side me.  Following Jesus is not meant to be a solitary experience.

Finally, there is the joy of the power and help of the Holy Spirit. There’s no way we could do any of this on our own. My first time going back into CCP was delayed several weeks due to various commitments. That first evening was a real struggle as I had just lost my mom a few days prior and was dealing with grief, uncertainty, and feeling very overwhelmed and physically exhausted. I was tempted to cancel, but I knew that in difficult times the Holy Spirit will meet us and help us in powerful ways.

As we progressed through the first service, I began to experience the refreshment of my soul and the invigoration in my body. I am responsible for leading the second service and by the time it started I could barely contain my excitement in sharing the love of God. I had to stop myself as I was in danger of beginning to “preach” and it was not my turn that evening. What an amazing moment!

By the time the service ended I was wide awake, excited and feeling more peaceful than I had felt in days.  God is so good!! If you are currently serving then I hope this is a fresh reminder of who you serve and why we serve and thank you for serving! I know the Lord is pleased. If you are not serving, please pray and consider how the Lord can use you to advance His kingdom. If you feel ill-equipped, trust me, he will empower you to do things you never dreamed possible. It will indeed, be your joy!

DEE-EYE-EFF

Death in Family (known in prison as a DEE-EYE-EFF) is probably one the most difficult situations chaplains need to deal with.

The news of the death of one of an inmate’s close family members is usually conveyed to the chaplain by a distraught member of his/her family. They either leave an emotional voice message or reach the chaplain directly. (Whenever I enter my office and see the red light that indicates an unheard voice message, my first thought usually is “Is that a DIF?)

DEE-EYE-EFF has a way of completely changing my day…just as it completely changed the life of a family “on the outside”. Death is so final…there is no re-play button, irrespective of how it came about. This is true for all humans, but receiving that message while in prison, adds another dimension…that of amplified regret.

“If only”, “Why Now?”, “What now?” and a host of such questions are asked…usually accompanied by heart wrenching cries and uncontrollable tears. Men who appeared tough when they enter the office with a big question mark on their faces, melt like babies when they hear that a loved-one passed away.

Responses to this news varies…from stunned silence, wailing, cursing and violent anger that have created situations where I, the messenger, have been closest to being assaulted in prison. The focused training and support of professional correctional staff have been “my saving grace” in many cases. Inmates breaking their fists on my desk, wrecking furniture or trying to escape into the building occurred…but the inevitable truth eventually sinks in…”they’re gone and I’m here in prison”.

This crisis creates incredible opportunities to share the “GOOD NEWS” of a Savior who overcame death, the grave, sin, and Hell. Pointing distraught and broken men and women to the Lord Jesus Christ is really all we can do. Sadly, this door does not remain open for too long before “it’s business as usual” and living life with a fatalistic worldview where there is hardly any “good” news.

Pray for us as chaplains to handle every DEE-EYE-EFF in a Christ-like manner and in obedience to the Holy Spirit, our ever-present Counselor.

Treasurer Report October 2023

“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”  Galatians 6:9

We’re thrilled to see what the Lord has in store as we continue to serve the needs of the souls in the Chester County prison and are thankful for all of the donors who give towards the efforts of Onesimus as needs continue to be satisfied.  As we prepare to enter the time of year where families gather for holidays and expect to give toward their loved ones, we want to encourage you to think of ones within the prison who have yet to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as He is the greatest Gift ever given!  If you feel the Spirit of God touching your heart to help reach any lost souls at Chester County through volunteer work or giving financially, then please reach out to us at Onesimus Ministries.  You can give online by clicking the “Donate” button and following the instructions on our web page or a gift can be mailed to 145 Bethel Road Oxford, PA 19363.

As a reminder, our annual banquet will be held on October 27 and if any church or organization would like to sponsor a table at the banquet, please send in a gift of $500 and reference “Table Sponsor”.  We look forward to seeing many of you at the banquet where we can encourage each other in the Lord as we celebrate His faithfulness to the ministry as lives are touched.

A Tribute to Andy Leatherman

We were disappointed that one of our longest serving board members, Andy Leatherman, submitted his resignation from the Onesimus board recently.

Andy cited some of the inevitable challenges of being an octogenarian…though you’d never know it to look at him…as the reason he felt he could no longer serve the board.

Thankfully, Andy plans to continue as a Prison Fellowship volunteer on Monday nights at Chester County Prison for as long as he can.  Ironically the message he preached at this past week’s service may have been the finest and most impactful sermon that he ever shared.  The men who attended were deeply moved, and heartily applauded Andy’s message.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Andy for almost 25 years, dating back to December of 1998, when I was an inmate at CCP.  To me, he and his beloved Dorothy epitomize what being true Christians are all about.  Their thoughtfulness, kindness and service to their church in even serving a refugee family (among, no doubt, numerous instances of giving of themselves over the years) will no doubt result in crowns that we’ll all be envious of one day.

No doubt many would join me in sharing such testimonies of Andy’s faithfulness.

“Well done, good and faithful servant!”

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 10/16/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It’s tough to compete with Philly sports teams running after a championship, so our numbers were low last evening at the Monday night services in Chester County Prison.  But as Dan always reminds us, “everyone that is supposed to be here, is here”.  I believe God blesses the faithfulness of those who show up no matter what, even when it’s not the convenient or popular thing to do.  And we were all blessed with His presence last night.

Andy’s message drove home the point that faith in the one true God is not about religion or rules, but a relationship with a heavenly Father who loves us more than we can imagine, and His Son who gave His all for us to be with Him forever, and gave us His Spirit to be with us forever.  We walked through many interactions between Peter and Jesus, showing that no matter how close we may ever get to Christ, we still mess up, and He stands ready  to forgive and restore us.  The men were very engaged, especially as Andy recounted parts of his own personal journey of faith.

At the beginning of both services, our prayer times began with meditating on these verses from Psalm 27:

Hear me as I pray, O Lord.

    Be merciful and answer me!

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”

And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”

Do not turn your back on me.

Do not reject your servant in anger.

You have always been my helper.

Don’t leave me now; don’t abandon me,

    O God of my salvation!

Even if my father and mother abandon me,

the Lord will hold me close.

Teach me how to live, O Lord.

Lead me along the right path,

for my enemies are waiting for me.

Do not let me fall into their hands.

    For they accuse me of things I’ve never done;

with every breath they threaten me with violence.

Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness

while I am here in the land of the living.

Wait patiently for the Lord.

    Be brave and courageous.

Yes, wait patiently for the Lord. (Psalm 27:7-14)

The Psalms are so rich yet so real as King David poured out his heart and emotions to the Lord.  May we likewise touch our Father’s heart with praise as we also lift up the inmates, their families, and the prayer requests below.  Thank you for your diligent prayers and support of this ministry.  May your treasures in heaven be piling up beyond belief!

Grace and peace,

Rick

Inmate Prayer Requests from Medium Security (7:00pm service):

  • Shaun– I pray for peace over my fellow inmates and our families.  I pray the Lord’s blessing on my 8 year old grandson Semaj on his birthday, and for my sister Aisha who is a hardworking nurse but struggling financially, may God bless her with his provision.
  • Ross– my cellmate Bernard would like to be here but has severe back pain.  I’m still in need of a place to live in Florida where I’m from, and for my lawsuits up here and down there to be settled. Also prayers for the inmates with covid, and for Israel.
  • Dave– for so many inmates going through hard times.  Please pray for my court date on Wednesday and for my family.
  • Luke– for everyone here, that God would meet each of us where we are and we could encounter Him.  I’m asking God to maintain my job for when I get out so I can support my family, or grant me another job if this one is gone. Pray that God would meet with my wife and soften her heart.
  • Mark– for my significant other who needs a place to live and hasn’t had much luck with her bad credit.  Pray that she makes it and that she’s OK.  I keep thinking of destiny – what am I supposed to learn here, and what am I supposed to do?  Help me to trust God as it looks like I may be going up state (prison). Please bless my family that’s left, as many have already died.
  • Angel– for peace in the world and in Israel.  For the children of the world and for my family, especially my brother who needs a kidney and my father who is in bad health.  I pray for my fiance to recover and find a place to live, and I pray for us in here who are waiting weeks and weeks without seeing a judge.
  • Luke– for my 3 sons – Dominic, Vincent, and Nate who are very young and don’t know I’m in prison.  Thanks for a good grandfather instilling faith in them by his example.  My one son is autistic and I pray for his understanding of faith.
  • Angel– a friend is on drugs and she’s very sick- God please heal her.
  • Shaun– so thankful for my granddaughter and that I get to see her when I’m in rehab.  Also pray for God’s message tonight to give us hope and give us a more positive state of mind.  Thankful for the volunteers who come out each week.

Inmate Prayer Requests from Minimum Security (8:30pm service)

  • Maurice– my Mom’s older sister is near death, I pray for my family especially my little cousins who have suffered so much loss in their lives already with Mom and Grandmother passing away.
  • Jacob– my 96 year old grandfather had a bad fall a week ago, and has had a lot of health scares, may God bless him with strength and heath.  Also pray for my daughter (she’s 2-1/2) and for those taking care of her.
  • Dean– I just want to pray for the world.
  • Andy L– for my neighborhood, as I look around there are so many problems – several broken marriages, and one woman who is all alone and needs a kidney transplant but is likely to die before that happens.
  • Andy D– for my brother, sister, and my wife – we are all still grieving the recent loss of my Mom.

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

We are very thankful for business owners stepping up to sponsor tables at the Annual Banquet for Onesimus Ministries on Oct 27.  We pray for a good turnout of people and a wonderful night of fellowship and praise for what God is doing through this ministry.

For speedy recovery of Pastor Vernon, our ministry Chairman Vernon dealing with some personal health issues.

Praise and thanksgiving for additional volunteers to join the ministry team going in on Monday nights.  We pray they will follow through and bless inmates with this new calling.

Pray for the prison staff as they continue to experience shortages which result in long hours and many shifts, also taking a toll on their families.

For our wonderful chaplains so faithful in serving the prison population week after week.  May the Lord bless them to be a blessing to many others.

We lift up the aftercare ministries focused on helping recently released women and men stay faithful to the new path established while in prison.  May they be blessed with all needed staffing and resources to be effective in their ministry.

If you’d like to find out more about mentoring and discipling a man or woman coming out of prison, drop us a note at info@onesimusministries.org.

Good Things Come

The saying, “Good things come to those who wait” has proven true in the case of the re-opening of our chapel for services. We waited and waited; then we waited some more. We even waited a bit more after that. Now, after 3 ½ years, our chapel has re-opened and we have re-commenced holding church services for the men and women of Chester County Prison! And for that we are rejoicing and giving thanks to God.

It has been wonderful to welcome the men and women back into our chapel, which for too long had sat quiet, dark, and empty. We are not yet where we used to be as far as the number of services we offer or the number of church volunteers coming in to minister, but we ARE open– and hopeful of gradually working our way back to our pre-Covid schedule.

The women (and men) have been streaming in, also happy to have services again. There truly seems to be a new level of attentiveness and engagement on their part. We are seeing steady, good attendance. Even one day when “Church!” was called at the same time as “yard time”, the women chose to come to church, forgoing their precious outdoor time on a beautiful sunny day.

In the services, the women have been very engaged and interactive; asking questions and offering comments. Many times, I have heard of the friendships and bonding happening between them; as they reach out to help and support one another. When I ask my typical opening request, “Give me one thing you’re grateful for today”, I’ve often heard the answer, “the women on my quad”, which is a beautiful thing.

They’ve developed the healthy habit of gathering with other women on the block who are seeking God, choosing to find their fellowship and friendship there– voicing a dislike of the prevalent tendency to gather for gossip, negative talk or disruptive behavior. God is moving in the hearts of these women and I pray He continues. It has been a complete joy being able to meet face-to-face with them again.

So, good things do come to those who wait– but I would amend the saying to, “Good things come to those who wait, especially when we trust God and are patient to wait on His timing.”

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 10/9/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

God used His willing servants in Chester County Prison again last night.  What an honor to be part of a team that brings the Word of God and the love of Christ into the prison chapel each week.  And to be in a small crowd of men who are so thirsty is quite an experience.  Many realize the road they’ve been on and the decisions they’ve made only lead to places like prison, and they want to change – they are looking for the right direction.  And God has placed a team of volunteers in that place at this time to direct them to Christ and His all-sufficient sacrifice.

Our brother Andy, who claims to be the oldest member of the team, brought the message from his rich tapestry of life experience, with the men hanging on every word.  He compared a few trials in his life to that of Job, proving personally that God can and will answer those who cry out to Him in desperation with a humble and contrite heart.  I think most all of the men could see themselves in a similar circumstance and were grateful to hear there’s a glorious way out from someone who’s been there.

Earlier in the service, the prayer time kicked off with the first half of Psalm 25.  I pray each week for God to lead me to the proper Psalm selection for the next service.  Once again I was encouraged at how this passage selected 2 weeks prior addressed so many of the prayer requests offered up in the first service.  I love it when He does that!

Psalm 25

A psalm of David.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

I trust in you, my God!

Do not let me be disgraced,

or let my enemies rejoice in my defeat.

No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced,

but disgrace comes to those who try to deceive others.

Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord;

point out the right road for me to follow.

Lead me by your truth and teach me,

for you are the God who saves me.

All day long I put my hope in you.

Remember, O Lord, your compassion and unfailing love,

which you have shown from long ages past.

Forgive the rebellious sins of my youth.

look instead through the eyes of your unfailing love,

for you are merciful, O Lord.

The Lord is good and does what is right;

he shows the proper path to those who go astray.

He leads the humble in doing right,

    teaching them his way.

The Lord leads with unfailing love and faithfulness

all who keep his covenant and obey his decrees.

For the honor of your name, O Lord,

    forgive my many, many sins.

Who are those who fear the Lord?

He will show them the path they should choose. (Psalm 25:1-12)

I pray each of you are encouraged as we are each week at how God is moving among His people.  And as His people, I also want to thank you for all you do in support of this prison ministry.  May God bless you and your families richly this week as we lift up the prayer requests below.

Grace and peace,

Rick

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

The Board of Directors continues to pray for a great turnout and an inspiring night or worship and updates at the Annual Banquet for Onesimus Ministries on Oct 27.

The volunteer team lifts up our brother Erwin’s wife and pray speedy recovery from minor surgery.

We all continue to pray for our ministry Chairman Vernon dealing with some personal health issues.

For firm commitment by recent prison ministry team volunteers and quick processing of applications that they can join us in the prison very soon.

We ask the Lord’s blessing upon staff members at Chester County Prison working long hours and many shifts due to personnel shortages, and for their families who are also impacted.

Lord, we ask you for lavish blessings of wisdom, strength and compassion upon our wonderful prison chaplains Rhonda and Heinrich as they minister daily in your name to many inmates and staff.

We continue to pray for aftercare ministries taking care of women and men recently released from prison, helping them build their new life on the foundation of Christ.  Lord, would you please provide for these ministries in all their areas of need, that they could concentrate fully on clients and not have to worry about resources.  We pray for many healed hearts and restored lives.
