But for the Grace of God, there go I

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:7

This verse in Isaiah 55 twice mentions the word “let” (ʿāzaḇ in Hebrew), which can be translated as “forsake, leave, leave off, faileth, fortify, help, committeth, destitute, refuseth, surely”.

It is clear from the text that the “wicked” and “unrighteous” need to “turn from” and then “turn to”. While its understandably easy to visualize an incarcerated inmate as the wicked and unrighteous, it should also dawn on each of us (who happen to read this outside a prison) that this verse is describing “me”.

But for the Grace of God, there go I” is a phrase most widely attributed to John Bradford, who said it upon seeing criminals who were being led to their execution in 1553. Bradford himself was executed two years later for heresy. He was a Protestant living in Roman Catholic English.

2023 and 1553 may be many years apart but it does not reduce the urgency for each of us to turn from wicked and unrighteous acts in our own lives and to urge, help (let) others to do the same.

Most attempts to help sinners, however, falls flat if the “turn to” does not end at the feet of Jesus where pardon is offered. Notice again that “Azab” include the active verb of “helping”. This helping clearly requires each of us whether we’re a prison chaplain or not, to actively work in word and in deed, in prayer or in giving to help (let) turn sinners to The LORD.

Please pray for us as chaplains never to forget… “But for the Grace of God, there go I.

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 7/31/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I find it very interesting when you see several things come together, almost like God is trying to teach us something 😉  For example, this morning’s devotion by Rick Warren was centered on the first verse I ever memorized, in Philippians 2…

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
(Philippians 2:3‭-‬4)
It’s not that uncommon to read a devotion based on a scripture we’ve memorized, but add in the facts that selflessness has been one of my greatest personal challenges (which is why I consider that scripture one of my life verses), plus I’m on vacation with my family at the beach this week, which gives me pause to wonder,  “Lord, what are you up to here?”

Being in close quarters with my kids again (they are both grown and live on their own now) gives me ample opportunity to practice the words I’ve memorized. And it’s like God gave me a nudge and said “you know that life verse you hold dear? Let’s put it into practice this week, shall we?”

Like many parents, I don’t feel like I did the best job raising my kids. I was often distracted with my job, friends, my own interests, or even ministry when I should have been fully invested in their young lives. Thank God my wife is such a great mom and consistently modeled selflessness so they could see how God wants us to interact, especially with those closest to us.

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)
And we serve a God of second chances. And third chances. And forth.. you get the idea.

“I—yes, I alone—will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again.,” (Isaiah 43:25)
“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Hebrews 8:12)
That’s one of the main messages we like to preach in the prison- that God hasn’t given up on them and there will be plenty more opportunities to do it right, the way He would have us do it.

We’re thankful for our front-line workers in the prison, Rhonda and Heinrich, and the many opportunities they have each week to provide consistent messages of love, forgiveness, and second chances to the inmates and staff at Chester County Prison. And we’re thankful for all of you who stand with us to support them through prayer and other means, that God’s word would continue to go forth and change lives behind bars. God bless your week, and surprise someone in your life with a totally selfless act this week. See the difference it makes.

Grace and peace,
Rick

Where God Dwells

As you may know, if you receive the prayer request list that Rick sends out each week, I recently took part in a tour to Israel. It had long been a dream of mine, to travel to the Holy Land and actually see the sights I’ve only read about in the Bible for such a long time. The trip was everything I had hoped it would be. So many times, I felt like I needed to pinch myself, hardly believing I was actually in the Land of the Bible; the land where the patriarchs wandered, where King David had his exploits with his mighty men, where Solomon’s Temple stood, and most especially, the land where Jesus lived, walked, taught, and healed.

One of the thoughts that ran through my mind the most is: “I had no idea Israel was such a beautiful country.” It is breath-takingly beautiful: from the barren, sandy hills of the Judean desert, to the calm, serene majesty of the Sea of Galilee, to the stunning vistas of the Dead Sea, there was so much beauty to behold. Yes, a beautiful country, Israel. But the jewel in the crown is Jerusalem. A quote I came across recently from the Talmud states, “Ten measures of beauty descended to the world; Jerusalem took nine.”

On our tour, we visited so many historical/biblical sites. Most notable among them (for me) were:

  • the Jordan River, at the place called the Baptismal Site, where they believe Jesus was baptized. Just setting my feet in the brown water of the Jordan was thrilling.
  • The Temple, the holiest site for the Jews, the place where God said He would put His Name forever; wherein was contained the Holy of Holies, where the Presence of God rested above the Arc of the Covenant. Standing at the Western Wall, my mind swirled with all these thoughts and emotions. The very Presence of God…so nearby, in His desire to dwell among His people.
  • The visit to Gethsemane and Golgotha were also surreal. Standing there it was hard to wrap my mind around what had taken place at these sites so many years ago, and the world-shaking implications of those events…. the very Son of God choosing to be a Sacrifice to save mankind.
  • At the Garden Tomb, peaceful and serene, it was amazing and thrilling to see the open entrance. Not sealed off by a large stone, but standing open for any who would to come in and see that the Tomb is, indeed, empty.

What a blessing and a privilege to get to travel to this most amazing country. It’s like stepping into the pages of the Bible. I am longing for the day when I can return. Thank you to those who prayed for me during my travels. Your prayers were answered. And thank you to all who support our ministry to the men and women of Chester County Prison. Our aim is to help them draw closer to this One Who sacrificed Himself for their sake. And your prayers and financial support help us do that. Thank you.

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 7/24/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I was blessed to retire from corporate America at the end of last year.  You can read all the books on retirement you like, it’s still a strange experience with surprises along the way.  If you over-analyze everything like I do, you begin to question everything now that you’re “on your own”.  Going from evenings and weekends to having ALL of your time available can be daunting.

Of course it’s great at first – like extended vacation.  Sleeping in, catching up on projects at home (or not), catching up on reading, having time to go to the gym and not be in a hurry for anything – a whole new world.  Yet through it all, I was plagued with wondering if there’s more I should be doing.  God blessed me now with an abundance of time – am I using it effectively for Him?

I prayed about it for months, had others pray for me as well, and sought wise counsel from mature Christian brothers and sisters. Finally, inspiration came through helping a friend solve his HVAC issues.  He was quoted hundreds of dollars for what seemed an easy fix.  I dropped by and got him fixed up in no time, saving him hundreds.  On the way home it struck me – I could help out others just like that.  I love to troubleshoot and solve problems, and I’ve done all sorts of home repair work for decades.

That evening, I read a biker devotional describing how different kinds of bikes (sport bikes, touring bikes, and cruisers) excel at different types of riding.  They’re all different, but it’s still riding (and still lots of fun!).  Like how people are all made with different skills and strengths, but with one overall purpose.

The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.  Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:12-13)

For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. (Ephesians 4:4)

The picture was becoming clear, and now the big question was how to use these skills and gifts for God’s glory?

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.(1 Corinthians 10:31)

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.(Colossians 3:17)

An old idea re-emerged with new vigor- why not become a Christian Handyman?  I told some family and friends about the idea, and they all thought it was a good fit.  Now I’m excited to start my own Handyman business to help people out, save them some money, all while spreading the love of Christ.  Lots of details to iron out, but it feels good to have a mission again.

What about you?  What are you good at? Are you using it for God’s glory? Our Chaplains are gifted at counseling, ministering to inmates, sharing the Word, and being God’s shepherds over His flock in Chester County Prison.  We’re honored to obey God’s will through supporting Rhonda’s and Heinrich’s gifts, and we are so very thankful for all of you and how you join us in that support.

May you all experience the rich blessings of our great God as you exercise your gifts to His glory!

Grace and Peace,

Rick

Prayer Requests from Chaplain Heinrich

Please pray for:

C.C. – 18 year old young man incarcerated for a serious crime that will alter his life. Pray that he finds Christ. Thank God for concerned neighbors who have reached out to him prior to the crime. May those seeds from God’s Word germinate in the darkness of his heart.

F.H. – Concerned about his family back home.

W.M. – Seeking information about Santeria, a polytheistic Afro-Cuban religion full of many mysterious elements that was developed in Cuba and then spread throughout Latin America.

B.E. – He wants information about the Pagan/Wicca “religion”.

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

Thankfulness for the safe return of Chaplain Heinrich and his wife Susan from their travels abroad.  May the encouragement from completion of a local dialect Bible translation stick with them, and may the refreshing received from family visits be felt for years to come.

Thanksgiving for a return to “normal” for Chaplain Rhonda now that Heinrich is back from an extended leave.

Continued prayers of strength, endurance, and wisdom for both Heinrich and Rhonda as they minister to everyone (inmate., staff, family members) connected with Chester County Prison.

Pray that discussions of the Chapel opening at the prison become reality, and that services for the inmates would resume very soon.

Also pray for quick expansion of activities within the chapel, that daily activities could expand into nightly activities where volunteers could come in and minister in person to inmates.

For health, physical and mental well-being, and peace to be evident throughout the prison population.

Pray for quick recovery from recent covid cases at the prison, and protection of inmate health ongoing.  And protection of the progress made towards reopening the prison – may these cases not be a setback.

And finally we lift up those that minister to released inmates, building upon the progress made while incarcerated.  May all the aftercare ministries flourish with adequate resources and volunteers, and may all clients get a very real sense of your presence, Oh Lord.

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 7/17/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I was hit with this question in a morning devotion – Do we trust God?

Do we trust Him when He puts someone in our path? Like a really needy, self-absorbed person- How do we trust Him in that situation? How do we know what to do?

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock. (Isaiah 26:3-4)

Jesus was constantly surrounded by self-absorbed needy people. Some might argue most of His disciples were like that.  How did He handle the most needy among the crowds?  How did He not get dragged down into their problems or become their sole provider of support?

He loved them. He healed them.  More importantly, he forgave them and reconciled their relationship with God.

But what can WE do?  Paul reminded the church in Corinth that we are all called into the ministry of reconciliation.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:17-20)

God’s word clearly instructs us to love them. But that doesn’t mean we submit to their every wish. In fact, sometimes the most loving thing we can do is withhold something that ultimately may not be beneficial to them.

Isn’t that what God does with us?

So we must trust.  Trust in the One who made all things. Trust in his Son who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  And trust in His Spirit who guides our understanding and leads us into all truth. No one ever said it would be easy, in fact Jesus warned us that we will have trouble…yet we must trust.

Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. (Luke 9.23)

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16.33)

As a ministry, we trust God to provide, and He always does. He’s proven His trustworthiness consistently- carrying this ministry through tight financial times, finding us needed resources (for free), and leading us to the right servants when our prior Chaplains retired. And He has brought all of you alongside us to support through prayer and other means. So why do we even hesitate to trust a God who’s provided over and over?

May God bless you richly as you trust in Him.

Grace and Peace,

Rick

Prayer Requests from Chaplain Rhonda

Here are the requests for this week:

K.S. – an older inmate; many times incarcerated; trying to focus on God and grow her faith; has a court hearing this week, asking for prayer.

T. F. – very open to the things of God; requesting much material to read and study; pray that her desire to know God continues to increase and is satisfied.

S.H. – reading, studying, and pursuing God with the woman mentioned above (T.F.); pray that they will encourage each other to keep going and that God will meet them.

A.N. – a very sweet woman; years of trauma and abuse; but still has a sweet, gentle spirit; wanting to reclaim the faith she knew as a child; please pray for her.

Also, please keep praying as the talk of opening the chapel again for services continues and increases; that soon we may be able to gather the men and women and tell them face to face about our wonderful Savior.

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

Traveling mercies for Chaplain Heinrich and his wife Susan as they return to the U.S. this week after an extended trip throughout South Africa and Mozambique.

Continued prayers for Chaplain Rhonda’s strength and endurance covering all Chaplain duties during Heinrich’s absence.

We pray God’s timing would be soon for volunteers to return to in-person ministry within Chester County Prison.  May any obstacles be removed and the way made clear for your servants to proclaim Your majesty directly to the inmates.

We lift up the inmates, staff, and all their families to You Lord, asking for blessing in the way each one needs. May there be good physical health and compassionate spirits across the cell blocks.

We pray for speedy recovery of any in prison who have fallen ill, and relief for those suffering withdrawal from addiction.  May each one receive the help they need.

We lift up the aftercare ministries to You Father, who have not stopped serving even during the pandemic time.  May their faithfulness bear fruit in the many women and men they counsel after release from prison. Please bless them with the time, resources, and volunteers needed to do Your will in that space.

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 7/10/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Recently a Christian brother and I were discussing an evangelism tool our church is rolling out called 3 circles.  It basically draws a picture of man’s progression from God’s original design, to the Brokenness we live in now, and the Gospel as the solution to restore our relationship with God. We use various scenarios to practice using the tool.

The most common scenario begins during discussion of a serious problem someone is struggling with, such as a close relative diagnosed with cancer.  We practiced this scenario and used the tool to walk through presenting the Gospel. Then a very pertinent question came up – How does the gospel message of salvation through Christ alone address the original problem?  How does it make things better?

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. (Romans 10:9-10)

I think many Christians may come across that question as they share the Gospel with others.  How does a  newfound faith apply to the original problem?

I pondered the question and believe the Holy Spirit led me to an answer.  When we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and are saved, we also receive God’s Holy Spirit who counsels us and leads us into all truth.  And that Truth goes way beyond our current circumstances, and beyond our very lives.  He gives us a new perspective on a much grander scale, where we can see ultimate healing when this life is over and there is no more sorrow, death, or sin.  While God may indeed intervene in our present circumstances and bring healing in this life, we can now see the brevity of this life in light of eternity.  And I believe that context can change our perspective on our current problems.

And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.  He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. (John 16:13-14)

I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21:3-4)

The enemy would have us believe we are alone in our struggles, but for the saved the light of Christ and fellowship within the family of God prove otherwise.  Men and women in prison are very much in tune with feeling alone in their struggles, and we thank God for our wonderful Chaplains Rhonda and Heinrich who consistently share and model the Gospel within the walls of Chester County Prison.  We are also very thankful for all of you, whose support allow this prison ministry to continue.  May God bless you in a special way this week.

Grace and Peace,

Rick

Prayer Requests from Chaplain Rhonda

Here are the requests for this week:

B.R. – sweet young woman, pursuing God, working her way through Bible study books; recently left CCP.

C.J. – asked for prayer; reincarcerated shortly after a previous incarceration.

R.O. – “Please, please, please can I have a journal, a Bible and just stuff to learn more and be closer to the Lord. Please and thank you.”

V.M. – a young woman dealing with severe mental illness, to the point of hallucinations and incoherency. She settled down and allowed me to pray for her and was very receptive. Please keep her in your prayers. God is able to heal.

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

Continued prayers for safety, wellness, and achieving their goals for Chaplain Heinrich and his wife Susan as they travel throughout Africa on an extended trip.

Also continued prayers for sanity and strength for Chaplain Rhonda as she “minds the store” while Heinrich is gone.

Lord, help us wait upon you, and we pray your timing is very soon to finally open up Chester County Prison to religious volunteers.  We acknowledge it’s all in your hands, and pray any roadblocks be put aside and your will be done.  Thank you for the progress made thus far, help us be patient for your perfect timing.

May the staff, inmates, and their families all enjoy your perfect peace in their hearts, minds, and bodies, as seen through Bible studies and fellowship, calmer attitudes, and healthy bodies.

Father, please pour out your blessing upon those who care for recently released women and men coming out of prison.  May the various aftercare ministries be effective in discipling these former inmates, and bless these souls as they forge a new path for their lives with You at the center.

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 7/3/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Independence Day is upon us.  We see red, white, and blue everywhere we look. Picnics are scheduled, barbeques are fired up, flags are flown, all in celebration of our freedom from tyranny when the original 13 North American colonies broke away from England.  The USA became an independent nation, free to choose its own path in laws and government structure.  This freedom came at great cost – many people gave their lives in a revolutionary war that dragged on for years.  Now every American can enjoy freedoms secured through the selfless acts of soldiers across the country.

Christians around the world can celebrate a similar yet more significant story.  Every person on Earth can enjoy freedoms over sin and death that were secured for us at great cost, although it wasn’t by many who gave their lives over many years.  It was one man – Jesus of Nazareth – the Christ – the Son of God – who achieved these freedoms for us by giving His life on a Roman cross about 2000 years ago, then rising from the dead 3 days later as He said He would.

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.  Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:34-36)

Now those who choose to believe in Him and accept His gift of righteousness in exchange for our sinfulness have the freedom to choose love, and the freedom to live with God for eternity.  And what God asks in exchange is that we love Him and love one another, and tell everyone how they can be free as well.

In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. (Ephesians 3:12)

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.  For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Galatians 5:13-14)

Our wonderful chaplains in Chester County Prison consistently share this Good News among the inmates and staff, and all who would listen.  Rhonda and Heinrich freely share what God has given them, as should we all.  Thank you for your support of this ministry, and as we celebrate our nation’s freedom, may we also share with others the freedom available in Christ Jesus.

Grace and Peace,

Rick

Prayer Requests from Chaplain Rhonda

Prayer requests for this week:

A.N. – leaving for rehab this week; dealing with mental health & trauma issues; very much wanting to “get it right” and re-connect with God, but “so scared” she will backslide again. She was very fearful; please pray that she will keep God at the center of her focus and trust Him to deliver her.

M.O. – left for rehab a few days ago; also wanting to reconnect with her Christian faith; very sweet and sincere; pray that she stays the course.

B.H. – back in CCP; requested a Bible and material to help grow her faith; asking for prayer for her son and grandmom.

K.S. – back in CCP after numerous previous incarcerations; asking for “prayer and spiritual guidance”.

T.J. – also back after numerous past incarcerations; serious mental health issues; seeking faith in God; please pray God will step in and change her life.

Also, please pray for the several older women (65 & over) in the prison population. A new one (68), a first-timer, just came in a few days ago. Not sure what’s bringing them in at this age, but pray that they encounter God while here.

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

For Chaplain Heinrich and wife Susan to experience blessings of grace, mercy, and safety as they travel throughout Africa.  May they bless so many others on this trip, while achieving their goals along the way.

God’s blessings on Chaplain Rhonda for extra strength and endurance to cover all chaplain duties while Heinrich is abroad.

Thank you, Lord, for progress made towards opening the prison to volunteers once more.  May your peace and motivation of love for us overcome any remaining obstacles so that we might minister in person to those in prison.

We ask your blessings of peace, good health, and prosperity upon all staff, inmates, and families connected with Chester County prison.

We ask for your protection of inmates hearts, minds, and souls, that they would seek You as the answer to what is missing in their lives.

May the Bible Studies and fellowships happening on the cell blocks continue to spread your Good News to all that would hear it.

Please pour out your continued blessings upon the aftercare ministries that take care of the women and men released from prison, as they try and make a new way in life.  May the clients continue to build upon the foundation of Christ, and may the ministries enjoy abundant resources and volunteers to get the job done.

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 6/26/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What motivates us?  What is it inside of us that moves us to take action, and determines what that action looks like?

There are many worldly motivations out there – greed, lust, power, pleasure, worldly wisdom, wealth – and the wisest man who ever lived had a similar question. King Solomon had the power and wealth to pursue every motivation we can think of, and do you know what he found out?  It all leads to nothing!

The book of Ecclesiastes is all about how he pursued each secular motivation to its logical end, and determined one after another that they were all worthless.  The whole book can be summed up in the first 2 verses, and the last 2 verses.

These are the words of the Teacher, King David’s son, who ruled in Jerusalem.  “Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!” (Ecclesiastes 1:1-2)

That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty. God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)

So the wisest man who ever lived summed it all up – the right motivation in life is to fear God and obey his commands.  We need only look further into God’s Word to understand what that means.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10)

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.  (Matthew 22:36-40)

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35)

My best understanding is God wants our primary motivation in life to be what His motivation has been all along – Love.  That’s why he created us and the world we live in.  That’s why He sent Jesus.  And that’s why Jesus died for our sins.  It was all for love.  And since we are created in His image, we can find our best selves if we are motivated by love.

I truly believe that’s what motivates our wonderful chaplains in Chester County Prison to do what they do each day.  I’m thankful for knowing them and witnessing their example.  I’m also thankful for each one of you who support this ministry week after week, year after year.  I have to believe the reason you do it is because of love – and how God wants us to love one another.  Thank you for following His command – may you have a blessed week.

Grace and Peace,

Rick

Prayer Requests from Chaplain Rhonda

Prayer requests for the week:

K.J. – very sweet and sincere young woman, wanting to turn her life around and desiring to get to know God while she was here; recently left, please pray for her.

C.P. – Sentenced to rehab: “which is ok. God places me where He wants me when He wants me there! I’ve learned that recently. The literature you gave me was amazing! God getting my attention really hit home. He has let me know I need a church home to fellowship!”

E.M. – Sent a desperate note: “Not sure when I’m leaving for rehab but I know I can’t see my boys or hear them cause of no more money on the phone. Boys need me so I pray this (rehab) works. I don’t want to hurt my boys. They need me and I need them. I miss my husband.”

C.C. – “I would like to speak with you please. I need lots of guidance immediately, and prayers and a Bible.”

S.B. – “Hello, may I have a journal to keep myself writing my thoughts. It helps with my anxiety.”

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 6/20/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are so blessed to have God’s Word so readily available to us.  We can easily find it in many languages and various translations, so there’s really no excuse to not read or study it every day. God wants us to immerse ourselves in His living Word, which is the only book that can renew and transform our minds.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

“Most of all, let the Word of God fill you and renew your mind every day. When our minds are on Christ, Satan has little room to maneuver.” — Billy Graham

God makes some significant promises to those to meditate on His Word – so how do we do that?  Unlike some eastern methods where the goal is to empty one’s mind, the goal of Christian meditation is to fill one’s mind with God’s Word and seek his mind.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Joshua 1:8)

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. (Psalm 1:1-3)

There are numerous ways to study/meditate on the Word – my favorite is simple yet effective.  Rick Warren calls it the “pronounce it” method, where you simply take one verse at a time, and you read it over and over, emphasizing the different major words each time, and thinking about that aspect of the verse.

For example, using John 3:16

For GOD so loved the world, that He gave his only Son…

For God so LOVED the world, that He gave his only Son…

For God so loved THE WORLD, that He gave his only Son…

For God so loved the world, that He GAVE his only Son…

(you get the idea)

Prison inmates not only have Bibles available to them, they also have a lot of time on their hands. Thank God we have our wonderful Chaplains Rhonda and Heinrich inside the prison each day to make those Bibles available and encourage the inmates to “dive in”.  Let’s pray they do just that.  And thanks for your tireless efforts to pray each week for our chaplains, the inmates and staff of Chester County Prison, and the specific prayer requests that get called out each week.  May God reward you for time spent in His Word and in prayer.

Grace and Peace,

Rick

Prayer Requests from Chaplain Rhonda

Prayer requests for the week:

M.O. – “I am requesting (the) Life Recovery Bible and work book. I read my cellmate’s first few pages and it broke me down. I don’t read much but cannot wait to read this. Thank you!”

A.R. – finally leaving CCP after a LONG stay; found faith in God while she was here. Pray that she stays strong in Him and keeps Him as her Refuge.

V.G. – a sweet young woman who has a very low estimation of herself; blames herself for everything; self-loathing has been ingrained into her. Please pray that she really finds out who she is through a relationship with God, and finds out who HE says she is.

A.P. – another sweet young woman, seeking to find peace in God after years of drug abuse and addiction.

Thanks to all who prayed for me as I spent time touring the Holy Land. I so appreciate all your prayers. I had an absolutely amazing time there! What a special place!!

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

Grace and Mercy for Chaplain Heinrich and wife Susan as they prepare for a trip to South Africa.  May they accomplish all they set out to do, and be blessed as they are a blessing to others.

For God to make a way to finally open the prison doors to religious volunteers once again, and give us the chance to minister to inmates in person.

Health and peace among the prison population.

For every inmate to take seriously the will of God to study His word and make disciples.

Blessings upon all the Chester County aftercare ministries, that they may effectively disciple the men and women released from prison as they rebuild their lives on the foundation of God’s truth.

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 6/13/23

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

At church on Sunday the Pastor interviewed a congregation member that presented the gospel message to a group of teens at a graduation party.  The interview demonstrated the effectiveness of an evangelism tool we’ve been learning called “the three circles”.  I was amazed not only by the courage of the presenter, but how engaged the teens were as he laid out the gospel message.  I guess you never know when people might be receptive to hearing about salvation, which is probably why Peter told us to always be ready.

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect (1Peter 3:15)

The presenter demonstrated his willingness to step out of his comfort zone, and in the power of the Holy Spirit he engaged with the youth.  If only we all were so bold in following the Great Commission.

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

Chaplains Heinrich and Rhonda exhibit that boldness often within Chester County prison, as many inmates take stock of their lives in prison and become quite receptive to hearing about God’s love and forgiveness.  We are so blessed to have them serving in there every week, and are also blessed by many of you who support the ministry with prayers and resources.  Thanks for your willingness to get involved.

Grace and Peace,

Rick

Prayer Requests from Chaplain Heinrich

Please pray for:

DM: His aunt passed away last Friday. She was a significant figure in his life. DM identifies with the Muslim religion. Pray that this event will find the Lord Jesus Christ

CM: He is a neighbor of one of the CCGM staff members and was involved in a shooting incident in Coatesville.

JT: He wants a Good and Evil Comic Bible (produced by Michael Pearl of No Greater Joy Ministries) “for a better understanding of the Bible”.

AS: “I’m in RHU now. My first day was rough and I’m not gonna be able to sustain my time here”.

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

Thanks for Chaplain Rhonda’s safe return from her Israel trip, and may her experiences there inspire even more passion to share the Good News.

Travel mercies for Chaplain Heinrich and wife Susan as they prepare for a trip to South Africa.  May it be a wonderful time of refreshing, and return to us safely.

Thankfulness for slow but steady progress towards re-opening the prison to religious volunteers.  May the various ministries that go into the prison continue to hone their skills and be ready once the time comes.

May the inmates and staff experience good health, good spirits, and a sense of Christ’s peace in the prison each day.

For each inmate to take a good look at the decisions that led them to this point in their life, and be inspired to now make the best decision ever – for Christ – to transform the rest of their life.

We lift up the aftercare ministries throughout Chester County that minister to released inmates from the prison – may they have all they need in resources and volunteers to be effective disciplers.  And may they witness the growth that God brings to each individual client.
