Treasurer Report October 2023

“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”  Galatians 6:9

We’re thrilled to see what the Lord has in store as we continue to serve the needs of the souls in the Chester County prison and are thankful for all of the donors who give towards the efforts of Onesimus as needs continue to be satisfied.  As we prepare to enter the time of year where families gather for holidays and expect to give toward their loved ones, we want to encourage you to think of ones within the prison who have yet to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as He is the greatest Gift ever given!  If you feel the Spirit of God touching your heart to help reach any lost souls at Chester County through volunteer work or giving financially, then please reach out to us at Onesimus Ministries.  You can give online by clicking the “Donate” button and following the instructions on our web page or a gift can be mailed to 145 Bethel Road Oxford, PA 19363.

As a reminder, our annual banquet will be held on October 27 and if any church or organization would like to sponsor a table at the banquet, please send in a gift of $500 and reference “Table Sponsor”.  We look forward to seeing many of you at the banquet where we can encourage each other in the Lord as we celebrate His faithfulness to the ministry as lives are touched.

A Tribute to Andy Leatherman

We were disappointed that one of our longest serving board members, Andy Leatherman, submitted his resignation from the Onesimus board recently.

Andy cited some of the inevitable challenges of being an octogenarian…though you’d never know it to look at him…as the reason he felt he could no longer serve the board.

Thankfully, Andy plans to continue as a Prison Fellowship volunteer on Monday nights at Chester County Prison for as long as he can.  Ironically the message he preached at this past week’s service may have been the finest and most impactful sermon that he ever shared.  The men who attended were deeply moved, and heartily applauded Andy’s message.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Andy for almost 25 years, dating back to December of 1998, when I was an inmate at CCP.  To me, he and his beloved Dorothy epitomize what being true Christians are all about.  Their thoughtfulness, kindness and service to their church in even serving a refugee family (among, no doubt, numerous instances of giving of themselves over the years) will no doubt result in crowns that we’ll all be envious of one day.

No doubt many would join me in sharing such testimonies of Andy’s faithfulness.

“Well done, good and faithful servant!”

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 10/16/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It’s tough to compete with Philly sports teams running after a championship, so our numbers were low last evening at the Monday night services in Chester County Prison.  But as Dan always reminds us, “everyone that is supposed to be here, is here”.  I believe God blesses the faithfulness of those who show up no matter what, even when it’s not the convenient or popular thing to do.  And we were all blessed with His presence last night.

Andy’s message drove home the point that faith in the one true God is not about religion or rules, but a relationship with a heavenly Father who loves us more than we can imagine, and His Son who gave His all for us to be with Him forever, and gave us His Spirit to be with us forever.  We walked through many interactions between Peter and Jesus, showing that no matter how close we may ever get to Christ, we still mess up, and He stands ready  to forgive and restore us.  The men were very engaged, especially as Andy recounted parts of his own personal journey of faith.

At the beginning of both services, our prayer times began with meditating on these verses from Psalm 27:

Hear me as I pray, O Lord.

    Be merciful and answer me!

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”

And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”

Do not turn your back on me.

Do not reject your servant in anger.

You have always been my helper.

Don’t leave me now; don’t abandon me,

    O God of my salvation!

Even if my father and mother abandon me,

the Lord will hold me close.

Teach me how to live, O Lord.

Lead me along the right path,

for my enemies are waiting for me.

Do not let me fall into their hands.

    For they accuse me of things I’ve never done;

with every breath they threaten me with violence.

Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness

while I am here in the land of the living.

Wait patiently for the Lord.

    Be brave and courageous.

Yes, wait patiently for the Lord. (Psalm 27:7-14)

The Psalms are so rich yet so real as King David poured out his heart and emotions to the Lord.  May we likewise touch our Father’s heart with praise as we also lift up the inmates, their families, and the prayer requests below.  Thank you for your diligent prayers and support of this ministry.  May your treasures in heaven be piling up beyond belief!

Grace and peace,

Rick

Inmate Prayer Requests from Medium Security (7:00pm service):

  • Shaun– I pray for peace over my fellow inmates and our families.  I pray the Lord’s blessing on my 8 year old grandson Semaj on his birthday, and for my sister Aisha who is a hardworking nurse but struggling financially, may God bless her with his provision.
  • Ross– my cellmate Bernard would like to be here but has severe back pain.  I’m still in need of a place to live in Florida where I’m from, and for my lawsuits up here and down there to be settled. Also prayers for the inmates with covid, and for Israel.
  • Dave– for so many inmates going through hard times.  Please pray for my court date on Wednesday and for my family.
  • Luke– for everyone here, that God would meet each of us where we are and we could encounter Him.  I’m asking God to maintain my job for when I get out so I can support my family, or grant me another job if this one is gone. Pray that God would meet with my wife and soften her heart.
  • Mark– for my significant other who needs a place to live and hasn’t had much luck with her bad credit.  Pray that she makes it and that she’s OK.  I keep thinking of destiny – what am I supposed to learn here, and what am I supposed to do?  Help me to trust God as it looks like I may be going up state (prison). Please bless my family that’s left, as many have already died.
  • Angel– for peace in the world and in Israel.  For the children of the world and for my family, especially my brother who needs a kidney and my father who is in bad health.  I pray for my fiance to recover and find a place to live, and I pray for us in here who are waiting weeks and weeks without seeing a judge.
  • Luke– for my 3 sons – Dominic, Vincent, and Nate who are very young and don’t know I’m in prison.  Thanks for a good grandfather instilling faith in them by his example.  My one son is autistic and I pray for his understanding of faith.
  • Angel– a friend is on drugs and she’s very sick- God please heal her.
  • Shaun– so thankful for my granddaughter and that I get to see her when I’m in rehab.  Also pray for God’s message tonight to give us hope and give us a more positive state of mind.  Thankful for the volunteers who come out each week.

Inmate Prayer Requests from Minimum Security (8:30pm service)

  • Maurice– my Mom’s older sister is near death, I pray for my family especially my little cousins who have suffered so much loss in their lives already with Mom and Grandmother passing away.
  • Jacob– my 96 year old grandfather had a bad fall a week ago, and has had a lot of health scares, may God bless him with strength and heath.  Also pray for my daughter (she’s 2-1/2) and for those taking care of her.
  • Dean– I just want to pray for the world.
  • Andy L– for my neighborhood, as I look around there are so many problems – several broken marriages, and one woman who is all alone and needs a kidney transplant but is likely to die before that happens.
  • Andy D– for my brother, sister, and my wife – we are all still grieving the recent loss of my Mom.

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

We are very thankful for business owners stepping up to sponsor tables at the Annual Banquet for Onesimus Ministries on Oct 27.  We pray for a good turnout of people and a wonderful night of fellowship and praise for what God is doing through this ministry.

For speedy recovery of Pastor Vernon, our ministry Chairman Vernon dealing with some personal health issues.

Praise and thanksgiving for additional volunteers to join the ministry team going in on Monday nights.  We pray they will follow through and bless inmates with this new calling.

Pray for the prison staff as they continue to experience shortages which result in long hours and many shifts, also taking a toll on their families.

For our wonderful chaplains so faithful in serving the prison population week after week.  May the Lord bless them to be a blessing to many others.

We lift up the aftercare ministries focused on helping recently released women and men stay faithful to the new path established while in prison.  May they be blessed with all needed staffing and resources to be effective in their ministry.

Good Things Come

The saying, “Good things come to those who wait” has proven true in the case of the re-opening of our chapel for services. We waited and waited; then we waited some more. We even waited a bit more after that. Now, after 3 ½ years, our chapel has re-opened and we have re-commenced holding church services for the men and women of Chester County Prison! And for that we are rejoicing and giving thanks to God.

It has been wonderful to welcome the men and women back into our chapel, which for too long had sat quiet, dark, and empty. We are not yet where we used to be as far as the number of services we offer or the number of church volunteers coming in to minister, but we ARE open– and hopeful of gradually working our way back to our pre-Covid schedule.

The women (and men) have been streaming in, also happy to have services again. There truly seems to be a new level of attentiveness and engagement on their part. We are seeing steady, good attendance. Even one day when “Church!” was called at the same time as “yard time”, the women chose to come to church, forgoing their precious outdoor time on a beautiful sunny day.

In the services, the women have been very engaged and interactive; asking questions and offering comments. Many times, I have heard of the friendships and bonding happening between them; as they reach out to help and support one another. When I ask my typical opening request, “Give me one thing you’re grateful for today”, I’ve often heard the answer, “the women on my quad”, which is a beautiful thing.

They’ve developed the healthy habit of gathering with other women on the block who are seeking God, choosing to find their fellowship and friendship there– voicing a dislike of the prevalent tendency to gather for gossip, negative talk or disruptive behavior. God is moving in the hearts of these women and I pray He continues. It has been a complete joy being able to meet face-to-face with them again.

So, good things do come to those who wait– but I would amend the saying to, “Good things come to those who wait, especially when we trust God and are patient to wait on His timing.”

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 10/9/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

God used His willing servants in Chester County Prison again last night.  What an honor to be part of a team that brings the Word of God and the love of Christ into the prison chapel each week.  And to be in a small crowd of men who are so thirsty is quite an experience.  Many realize the road they’ve been on and the decisions they’ve made only lead to places like prison, and they want to change – they are looking for the right direction.  And God has placed a team of volunteers in that place at this time to direct them to Christ and His all-sufficient sacrifice.

Our brother Andy, who claims to be the oldest member of the team, brought the message from his rich tapestry of life experience, with the men hanging on every word.  He compared a few trials in his life to that of Job, proving personally that God can and will answer those who cry out to Him in desperation with a humble and contrite heart.  I think most all of the men could see themselves in a similar circumstance and were grateful to hear there’s a glorious way out from someone who’s been there.

Earlier in the service, the prayer time kicked off with the first half of Psalm 25.  I pray each week for God to lead me to the proper Psalm selection for the next service.  Once again I was encouraged at how this passage selected 2 weeks prior addressed so many of the prayer requests offered up in the first service.  I love it when He does that!

Psalm 25

A psalm of David.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

I trust in you, my God!

Do not let me be disgraced,

or let my enemies rejoice in my defeat.

No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced,

but disgrace comes to those who try to deceive others.

Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord;

point out the right road for me to follow.

Lead me by your truth and teach me,

for you are the God who saves me.

All day long I put my hope in you.

Remember, O Lord, your compassion and unfailing love,

which you have shown from long ages past.

Forgive the rebellious sins of my youth.

look instead through the eyes of your unfailing love,

for you are merciful, O Lord.

The Lord is good and does what is right;

he shows the proper path to those who go astray.

He leads the humble in doing right,

    teaching them his way.

The Lord leads with unfailing love and faithfulness

all who keep his covenant and obey his decrees.

For the honor of your name, O Lord,

    forgive my many, many sins.

Who are those who fear the Lord?

He will show them the path they should choose. (Psalm 25:1-12)

I pray each of you are encouraged as we are each week at how God is moving among His people.  And as His people, I also want to thank you for all you do in support of this prison ministry.  May God bless you and your families richly this week as we lift up the prayer requests below.

Grace and peace,

Rick

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 10/2/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I appreciate everyone’s prayers for the message I presented at both services in the prison last night.  Evidence of the power of prayer – the men stayed engaged as we walked through every verse of John 20 (the empty tomb and Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene, then the disciples).  The volunteers told me even the inmate who is typically a disruption (he sits in the back row talking) was paying attention.  That had little to do with me, I consider it ongoing fulfillment of prophecy in Isaiah 55:11.

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11, KJV)

He even thanked us at the end for bringing the Word.  God’s Word is indeed alive and powerful!

After teaching through scripture and giving an invitation to accept Christ, I commissioned every inmate to spread the Good News to everyone (Mark 16:15) by telling their own story of salvation to men back on the cell blocks.  I challenge us all to do the same in our communities, especially since Christ himself directed us to do it (more a command than an option) in Mark 16 and Matthew 28.

A shout out with thanks to my brother Phil Taylor who took over the prayer time last night since I brought the message.  He collected and prayed through the prayer requests below.  And thanks to all of you for doing your part in lifting up in prayer these men and their requests throughout the week.  One inmate even commented last night how much it means to him that others are praying for him.  Never underestimate the importance of this part of the ministry.  God bless you!

Grace and peace,

Rick

Inmate Prayer Requests from Medium Security (7:00pm service):

  • Buddy– for all the men in the room to make it out of here and get back to our families, and a former cellmate who was acquitted and still waiting to be released.  Also pray for all the unbelievers.
  • Luke– forgiveness for a year of bad decisions that led to a second DUI and ruined marriage.  Thank God my wife isn’t seeking divorce, and I pray not to lose my job.  I pray for a second chance to save my marriage, for my wife to have a softened heart not just for me but for Christ, and pray for my 3 kids.
  • Ross– I’m from Florida and going through a lot, pray that everything will work out OK, that I would be released without probation, and find a place to live in Florida when I get out of here.
  • Angel– I feel as though I’m treated like an animal in here, pray to get out of this place.  Also pray for my family, especially younger brother who needs a kidney.  Also pray for my father, and for my fiancé to not go back to her old ways of drug addiction.
  • John– that my application to seminary in Philadelphia would come through.
  • Thomas– continued sobriety, and for acceptance from my family, especially my grandkids.
  • (name not given)– for the children of the world.
  • Dave– for my children, and a good outcome of my case.
  • Shaun– for my daughter and two grandsons.
  • Demonte– my family and loved ones, and everything to go well with my case.

Inmate Prayer Requests from Minimum Security (8:30pm service)

  • Chris– for my daughter Stormy and my wife Mariah to find their way.
  • Oscar– for my upcoming hearing, and for all the people on the cell blocks. Also want to pray for my enemies.
  • Maurice– for my friend Latisha to have joy and happiness in her life.
  • Dean– for my family, and for me to have Spiritual knowledge and understanding.
  • Bo– that everyone here would accept Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior, and that we can all find strength from the Lord to endure, and to have faith.
  • Dan T– for my friend whose 18-year-old son committed suicide and he blames himself for the harsh way he treated him.  He is in counseling sessions in Florida, and I pray God would touch his heart and he can learn to forgive himself.
  • Chris– for the people back on the block.
  • Phil T– for my son-in-law Alan who cut up his finger really badly.  Not just for his physical healing, but that he would also yield to Jesus and also lead his family to Christ.

Back In Jail

It may sound goofy, but it’s really good to be back in jail! I did a recent calculation and I have been inside Chester County Prison a total of 1,250 times plus a few more. That’s 50 times a year for 25 years plus a few times to counsel with an inmate who wanted to talk with me one on one during the week.

I think it is safe to say that I have a basic understanding of the security inside that place and those directing their anger and vitriol toward the staff inside there have none. The Correctional Officers inside Chester County Prison are the best you will find anywhere. They are not just smart; they are street smart too. They are tough and professional and those of us who are allowed inside to share the Gospel rely on them.

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 9/25/23

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Monday Night Prison Fellowship team is excited to welcome 11 new volunteers from 2 different churches, but all of us in the same Body of Christ.  We prayed to the Lord of the harvest and He provided!  Some may be called into the prison to minister on Monday Nights, while others called to pray for the incarcerated men and women.  In either case, we are thrilled for them to join the team.  Welcome one and all!

During the two worship services in the prison chapel last night, the team focused on who is Jesus, is He really God, and did He really rise from the dead?  We can’t always tell who accepts Christ into their life for the first time, but I love that we give an invitation each week.  When the Word of God is preached, you never know whose hearts may be stirred by the Holy Spirit!  And it’s always great to welcome new souls into the Kingdom of God.  What an honor it is to be the hands and feet of God in that place.

Please keep me in prayer as I prepare the message for next week.  For the past few weeks I’ve felt God’s prompting to teach through John 20.  I can now see how my message will continue last night’s teaching on the resurrection of Christ.  It’s almost as if there is a greater plan in place – ya think?

God is so good.  I love it when He does things like that.

Prayer time in last night’s services kicked off with the first half of Psalm 20, followed by lifting up to the Lord the men’s prayer requests that are listed below.

Psalm 20

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

1 In times of trouble, may the Lord answer your cry.

May the name of the God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm.

2 May he send you help from his sanctuary

    and strengthen you from Jerusalem.[a]

3 May he remember all your gifts

and look favorably on your burnt offerings. Interlude

4 May he grant your heart’s desires

and make all your plans succeed.

5 May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory

and raise a victory banner in the name of our God.

May the Lord answer all your prayers.

Please keep all the men and women in CCP, along with their heart cries illustrated below, in your prayers throughout the week.  Thanks for your involvement in this ministry, and may our great God bless you richly this week!

Grace and peace,

Rick

Praying for everything to come together and for a wonderful Annual Banquet for Onesimus Ministries on Oct 27.

For two of the Onesimus Prison Ministry board members dealing with some personal health issues.

Continued prayers for volunteer Dan’s 94-year-old mother-in-law struggling with health and longing to go home to Jesus.  Also continued prayers for volunteer Andy’s family grieving the loss of his mother June.

Please continue to lift up the staff of Chester County prison and their families dealing with long work hours due to staff shortages.

Ongoing prayer for our wonderful prison chaplains Rhonda and Heinrich serving so many inmates and staff each day.  Lord, grant them the drive and passion to show the love of Christ in a very real way to all those they come in contact with.

For aftercare ministries in Chester County serving recently released women and men as they rebuild a new life after prison.  May the ministries flourish and the clients each experience God’s love in setting up new habits and basing their lives on the firm foundation of Christ.

Prison Ministry Prayer Requests for this week – 9/18/23

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Monday night team is almost back to pre-pandemic strength, with 6 volunteers covering both services.  The big difference is that prior to the break, the first and second services were covered by different teams.  Until we can further build up the team, we’re all doing “double duty”.  Please pray with us for more laborers.

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;  therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38)

God already knows what we need, but I think He likes us to ask anyway to demonstrate our reliance upon Him, and to remind us how good He is to us (all the time).

And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matthew 6:7-8)

And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for. (1 John 5:14-15)

In fact, God has been answering that prayer in that we have a number of new volunteers going through the clearance/investigation process right now.  That doesn’t necessarily mean everyone will be approved, plus we’ve all seen volunteers in the past who come a few times then decide this ministry is not for them.  So please keep the team in prayer for strength and longevity in our volunteer pool.

We had another set of good services last night, and the prayer requests are below.  Our prayer time was kicked off with an excerpt from Psalm 18.

To the faithful you show yourself faithful;

to those with integrity you show integrity.

To the pure you show yourself pure,

but to the wicked you show yourself hostile.

You rescue the humble,

    but you humiliate the proud.

Lord, You have brought light to my life;

my God, you light up my darkness.

In your strength I can crush an army;

with my God I can scale any wall.

God’s way is perfect.

All the Lord’s promises prove true.

He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.

For who is God except the Lord?

Who but our God is a solid rock?

God arms me with strength,

and he makes my way perfect.

He makes me as surefooted as a deer,

leading me safely along the mountain heights.

He prepares me for battle;

he strengthens me to draw a bronze bow.

You have given me the shield of your salvation.

    Your right hand supports me;

your gentleness has made me great.

You have made a wide path for my feet

to keep them from slipping. (Psalm 18:25-36)

Thank you for praying for the inmates, their families, and these requests each week. Your ministry to them is so important, and you are blessing them more than you know.  May God bless you as well.

Grace and peace,

Rick

Prayers from Onesimus Ministries

Thankful that the escaped convict was recaptured without any shots fired or injuries to law enforcement officials, and that residents can feel safe again.

Thankful for all the dedicated law enforcement teams that came together and worked tirelessly for 2 weeks to accomplish the mission.

Continued prayers for families of a few Onesimus Ministries board members.  Strength and wisdom for Dan’s family caring for his 94-year-old mother-in-law.  And for Andy’s family grieving the loss of his mother June.

Prayers for the staff of Chester County prison and their families as staff must work long hours due to shortages.  Pray for staff shortages to be relieved and regular working hours to return.

For chaplains Rhonda and Heinrich serving inmates and staff each day, showing the love of Christ to everyone at the prison.

For the aftercare ministries that take good care of recently released men and women as they strive to maintain faith and discipline towards God’s Word and His will for their life.  May they be fruitful in their endeavors and may they enjoy ample resources and volunteers to get the job done.
